From Yohji Yamamoto’s Fall/Winter 1999 runway collection, this black coat dress defined by the season’s signature hybrid construction, dissolving the boundary between tailored outerwear, a cape, and a dress. Fastened beneath a pointed collar, two elongated front panels fall freely from the shoulders, while the reverse forms a broad cape-like yoke across the upper back.
The gathered waist and buttoned knee-length body introduce structure beneath the enveloping upper layer, creating a silhouette that shifts dramatically between the front, side, and back. Side openings allow the arms to emerge naturally from beneath the draped panels, while a rear vent preserves movement.
A particularly strong example of the season’s exploration of modular layering and garments that transform around the body rather than following conventional coat construction.
